Interoperability of Events in the Fediverse

Hooray! It is now official: We have been granted funding by NLnet to support the realisation the vision we outlined in our last post.

Events are at the heart of social life and deserve to be treated accordingly in the Fediverse. […]

In addition, we will also investigate the Fediverse Auxiliary Service Provider Specifications (FASPs) for discoverability and filtering of public events.

  1. @blog Smithereen has had support for events for several years now…

Hey Gregory! Long time no see! 🙂

I knew, so cool! But I never looked in detail, e.g. if it supports any "extras" or follows just the "Invite" -> "Accept" workflow as sketched in the specification?

Can you recommend a public instance I could maybe join to play around a bit?

Is Smithereen documenting this kind of stuff? I couldn't find anything, though I only did a quick scan.

Another thing: please let me know any feedback you have on https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/fep/8a8e/fep-8a8e.md
Being compatible with that FEP should not be "hard".

      1. @linos @blog Smithereen events are a subtype of groups. The `Event` object in my implementation is just an attachment in the group that actually represents the event and can't exist on its own. The documentation is here: https://github.com/grishka/Smithereen/blob/master/FEDERATION.md#events–tentative-membership

There are no Smithereen instances with open registrations at the moment but I can invite you to my personal one.

        1. @linos @blog here's an example event: https://friends.grishka.me/event63
And another one with some tentative members: https://friends.grishka.me/event70

Do note that this feature is a bit rough at the moment. For example, there isn't a field for the location. It's already on my todo list for the upcoming version (0.11). But invitations, tentative membership, and reminders all work.
